Lynchburg Historical Facts

Lynchburg was named after its founder, John Lynch, who started a ferry service across the James River in the 1750s.

Lynchburg is known as “The Hill City” because its surrounded by 7 hills: College Hill, Garland Hill, Daniel’s Hill, Federal Hill, Diamond Hill, White Rock Hill, and Franklin Hill.

In 1865 Lynchburg served as the state’s capital from April 6th-10th.

In the 1890s Dr. Charles Browne Fleet, a pharmacist and inventor, created chapstick.

Forest

Forest is a suburb of metropolitan Lynchburg, located just 12 miles away, you get the convenience of city living with the peacefulness and natural beauty of country living; It truly is the best of both worlds!

Forest’s most notable piece of history is Poplar Forest, which served as Thomas Jefferson’s private retreat.

 

Campbell County

Campbell County is south of Lynchburg and includes Altavista, Brookneal, Concord, Evington, Gladys, Lynch Station, Naruna, Rustburg, and Timberlake.

Bedford County

Surrounded by mountains, Bedford County is full of charm and natural beauty.

West of Lynchburg, Bedford County includes Big Island, Coleman Falls, Forest, Goode, Goodview, Huddleston, Lowry, Moneta, Montvale, Thaxton and parts of Boonsboro.
